School Cricket
Cricket is played at most primary schools. CJCA oversees schools cricket and is a keen supporter. CJCA provides the Christchurch Primary Schools Shield which has been played for since 1899. This historic shield is believed to be the oldest cricketing trophy in New Zealand, it went missing for 68 years until it was found and resurrected for competition in 2009.
The New Zealand Cricket National Primary Schools Cricket Championships (NZ Cup and Shield) are no longer run a from 2022.
YEAR 5-6 CHRISTCHURCH
SCHOOL FESTIVALS
The Christchurch Junior Cricket Association will again be running our Superstar Cricket League in Term 4 2022, and Term 1 2023. There are a few changes for the 22/23 season, which we hope will benefit all schools and enable all schools to participate in one of the options.
As with last season, the CJCA Activation team will be available to run basic skill sessions at your school before or during the competition to increase team skills and the team’s enjoyment of participating.
For the 2022-23 Season we will require schools to provide an older student, parent or teacher to assist us with umpiring, if this is a barrier to entry, please get in touch, as we will have some resource available, but not the 10+ required each week. All umpires whether CJCA provided or from the school should be encouraged to assist all the students with on field skills such as bowling technique and running between the wickets.
See below for details for each term, along with closing dates for entry. This will provide us with enough time to carry out a draw and advise teams of where and when they are playing in time for the first game. We are aiming for each team to have at least 3 games, plus finals where appropriate.
As you can see from below Schools have the option of entering in either the normal Round Robin Competition or into a Festival Day when you will play all 3 games in a single day – this is to assist schools who may find this a better option than a weekly commitment involving transport or going off-site. If you are entering the festival days, please advise Cat if you think you will be a stronger team to assist with grading games.
Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in contact.

BOYS FESTIVAL 27th & 28th November 2023 venue Polo Grounds and Hagley Corner
With the cessation of the New Zealand Cricket National Cup and Shield Competitions in Term 4 the CJCA will co-ordinate Festivals for Year 7 and 8 students. It is hoped that we, in conjunction with Primary Sports Canterbury, will be able find dates and design events in both Term 1 and Term 4 2024.
Term 1 & 4 2024 dates will ideally be available by the end of Term 3 2023.
In addition to a grade which will be called Competitive an additional Participation grade will again be offered in both genders.
The aims of these options is to provide schools with options at the appropriate level of competition for their teams without putting them out of their depth against more established cricketing schools or teams with existing experienced junior cricketers.
The move to Incrediballs in both the Participation grades is seen being easier for some schools and participants. For existing cricketers it is still cricket and aims to lessen some risk factors related to less experienced participants. THE CJCA WILL SUPPLY THE INCREDIBALLS FOR THIS FESTIVAL TO ENSURE CONSISTENCY.
A maximum of 18 teams in total will be able to be accommodated in each of the events (Boys and Girls) and should entries go over this number (this is only anticipated in the Boys) – an additional venue may be added.
If you wish to enter, simply e-mail [email protected] with your entry and whether it is for a girls team, boys team or both and include the contact details of the person who we can send the draw and other information too.
THE CJCA AIMS TO SUPPLY UMPIRES FOR ALL GAMES BUT TEAMS MAY BE REQUIRED TO SUPPLY A SQUARE LEG UMPIRE AND WILL DEFINITELY BE REQUIRED TO SUPPLY THEIR OWN SCORER.
Please also indicate whether your entries are for Competitive or Participation grades
SCHOOLS ARE NOW LIMITED TO TWO ENTRIES IN THE COMEPTITIVE GRADE but a maximum of 1 in the participation grade.

- 12 overs per innings
- 3 Bonus runs for each wicket taken by bowling team

- Following Day 1 results will determine Day 2 games
