With West Coast pulling out, both Christchurch and Otago provided 2 equal teams to even the numbers for the Tournament held at Hagley Park - Christ's College grounds. Great batting conditions resulted in ten centuries being recorded. Otago's final signalled it's success, Richard Hadlee congratulating the team effort in the nor-wester. Craig Cumming scored a record 3 centuries

The Christchurch team became eliminated by Southland on the first morning when Jeff Wilson was unleashed, taking 6 for 27 in it's meagre 64. Jeff created a new record of 37 wickets at 7.29.

In the lead up to this Tournament, Chris Cairns had moved up to Christchurch in the winter. As Captain, Chris ended his 5 year SI Tournament reign of terror on opposing hopes. He continued several seasons ahead of his counterparts in all under-age level before being whisked over to Perth for his first Test Match. Christchurch duly won the Tournament. This tournament saw the first of the rotational draw over five days of play on a trial basis.
